Summary

OPB is hiring a Researcher/Writer to research and vet story ideas and background, pre-interview subjects, gather information in the field and write stories for distribution on OPB (digital, radio and TV). This hourly, non-exempt position is a full time, regular status position with benefits.

Position Details

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

This position works as a writer and researcher in collaboration with reporters and producers on OPB’s multimedia science and environment team to contribute to reports for both digital and broadcast platforms (radio and television). Work includes researching and vetting story ideas and background, pre-interviewing subjects, gathering information in the field and writing stories for distribution on OPB. The Writer/Researcher will work with media assets gathered for stories to extend coverage and distribution across platforms (such as by working with a TV producer to create additional text or audio stories, or creation of pieces for social media platforms).  

Working Conditions:

The Researcher/Writer will work primarily in the office though occasionally will be in the field. The work may require travel to remote locations, working evening or weekends, and possibly working in inclement weather.  Moving equipment up to 20 pounds is sometimes required.    

Minimum Position Required Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attitudes):

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.
  • Two years’ experience in news, video production, radio or digital content development.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand environmental and science subject matter.
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines consistently, organize assigned work and tasks, and communicate effectively with editors and co-workers.
  • Experience using audio and/or video recording equipment and editing software such as Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Ability to work well with colleagues in collaborative creative environment.
  • Familiarity with and commitment to upholding journalistic ethics and integrity.    

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, film studies, communication, or scientific discipline.
  • Experience working in a newsroom or production company environment.
  • Photography or video production skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to share content and engage with audiences on social media platforms.
  • Familiarity with environmental and science issues common in the Pacific Northwest.
  • An eye for diverse voices and sources in stories.
