The current exhibition on display at Portland’s Blackfish Gallery, “East Meets West,” showcases professional and contemporary art from Central and Eastern Oregon.

Blackfish Gallery member Melinda Thorsnes, who was instrumental in developing the concept of the exhibition, knows many artists who live east of the Cascades and is aware that few have the opportunity to show their work in Portland galleries.

“This is a first-time viewing for a lot of the Portland audience, to see these artists,” says Thorsnes.

The exhibition is curated by Sandy Brooke, Henry Sayre and Boyd Harris and features 16 artists representing diverse artistic backgrounds. At the exhibition, you’ll find everything from ceramic sculpture, to photography, to mixed media.

“We were looking for a very high level of professional artist, so people who have a resumé — [who] show their work around the United States,” says Brooke. Brooke is also an accomplished painter and one of the exhibition’s featured artists.

“These aren’t just ‘Sunday painters’ — these are people who work as artists for a living,” she adds.

The exhibition will be hanging at the gallery throughout the month of August, closing on September 1st.
