“When I was a little kid, I was taught to go out onto the stage and you must always smile. Smile smile smile smile. And flamenco is really the only dance form I’ve ever done where I can be anything I want on the stage. I can be ugly. I can be angry. I can be passionate,” said Melinda Hedgecorth after her recent performance at the Milagro Theatre.
Hedgecorth’s piece, “De mi barrio,” was featured as part of Miracle Theatre Group’s La Luna Nueva — the organization’s fourth annual festival honoring Hispanic Heritage Month. Miracle Mainstage’s Artistic Director Olga Sanchez described Miracle Theatre Group’s goal as “bring[ing] the finest Latino arts and culture experiences to the Northwest and beyond.”
Shouts of “¡Olé!” from audience members cheering the performers filled the theater during “De mi barrio,” which included performances by flamenco dancer Laura Onizuka, founder and owner of Portland Flamenco Events, guitarist Ricardo Diaz and singer Vicente Griego.
La Luna Nueva continues throughout the month of September with theater performances, poetry readings, concerts and more.
