Each week Oregon Experience shares a photo highlighting the state’s diverse, exciting history.
On June 1, 1905, Portland hosted the Lewis and Clark Exposition, the first World’s Fair on the West Coast.
The fair boasted many elaborate and exotic exhibits and pretty, single women were often hired to entice men to enter. This greatly concerned the national organization Traveler’s Aid, which feared these impressionable young women would disappear into the world of “white slavery,” a concern fueled by many movies of the time.
Watch the Oregon Experience documentary “Lola G. Baldwin” to learn how the Lewis and Clark Exposition opened the door for Portland's -- and the nation's -- first female police officer.
