During this year’s Portland Jazz Festival, KMHD hosted a live performance with Tirtha, a trio that fuses Indian Classical music with Jazz improvisation. Lead by one of Jazz’s rising stars, pianist Vijay Iyer, Tirtha explores a range of sounds and moods in their music.
This uncommon Jazz trio (which combines guitar, piano and tabla) pairs Iyer’s playing with the formidable talents of guitarist/composer Prasanna and tabla player Nitin Mitta. The band was formed by Iyer in 2007 for a concert celebrating 60 years of Indian independence. “Tirtha” is the Sanskrit word for crossing, and this boundary-stretching trio does just that to the musical divisions between Jazz and Indian music.
