Sarah Versprille and Dan Hindman both play in the band Vetiver, and a few years ago played in the touring band of Cottage Grove, Oregon’s Richard Swift. When rent in New York City became too much, and with plans to record at Swift's studio in Oregon, they moved west to Portland and set about making music as Pure Bathing Culture.
Pure Bathing Culture played their first public shows in January of this year, and released a debut 4-song EP a short time later. On the strength of early shows and listens to their EP, the pair was named #2 in Willamette Week's Best New Band poll this year.
Although they made their record as a piano-guitar duo, with a drum machine to back them, they have since added bassist Zach Tillman to the group and will play their first live shows with a drummer this month.
Pure Bathing Culture played this lovely session in the opbmusic studios. Listen to "Lucky One" and "Ivory Coast" — two of the songs that have been circulating since the release of the EP — or listen to the last two, which are heard here for the first time.
