Children line up in the sand. Toes squish into the starting line. Each squirming racer stands wearing a harness with long lines stretching out behind them and a circular piece of fabric, a bowl-shaped kite, ready to catch the wind.
With the blare of Herb Alpert's trumpets, the Running of the Bowls begins! If running in the sand is tough, adding the drag of a parachute behind makes speed records impossible.
But it sure is fun to watch the kids struggle. Here's a glimpse of the fun that didn't make it into this week's Oregon Field Guide story on the Lincoln City Kite Festival.
This year's Summer Kite Festival will take place June 23-24 at the D-River Wayside beach from 10 am to 4 pm.
The video was filmed and edited by Michael Bendixen.
