Whale Blows a Rainbow

What a great surprise! OPB Videographer Michael Bendixen got a great shot and didn’t even know it at the time. A California gray whale swam alongside a boat off the Oregon Coast. It exhaled and the spray dissipated quickly. Bendixen’s camera has a black-and-white viewfinder so he missed seeing this special treat live while he was filming.

The whale spray briefly formed a rainbow that seems to almost leap through the air. It disappeared as quickly as it formed.

I discovered Bendixen’s happy accident recently as I was transcribing video for an upcoming story about diving for science in the Pacific. Watch for that story later this season on Oregon Field Guide.
