Cartoonist Chris Ware's latest book, Building Stories, was named one of the New York Times "10 Best Books of 2012." and "Top Ten Fiction Books of the Year" by TIME magazine. His book Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth won the Guardian First Book Award and was listed as one of the "100 Best Books of the Decade" by The Times (London) in 2009. Ware is also a frequent contributor to the New Yorker and the Virginia Quarterly Review. His original artwork has also been displayed in the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt Museum, and he was the first cartoonist to be included in the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial Exhibition. Dave Eggers says Ware's work is "at once the most elaborate and the most controlled example of the comics medium yet produced."
Chris Ware will be in conversation with Chip Kidd, a book designer and author of several books about comics,
including Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz. Kidd is Chris Ware’s editor at Random House.
Portland Arts & Lectures
The 29th season of Portland Arts & Lectures begins on October 8, 2013 with a lecture by Salman Rushdie, the celebrated and controversial international author of eleven novels. Ann Patchett, the author most requested by the audience in a recent survey, will appear November 20, 2013. January 14, 2014 brings Pulitzer Prize-winning nonfiction author of The Looming Tower, Lawrence Wright, whose most recent book is Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief. Graphic novelist and noted cartoonist Chris Ware will appear in conversation with renowned book designer Chip Kidd on February 18, 2014. The season rounds out with one of the most significant and critically-acclaimed Latina writers, Julia Alvarez, on April 3, 2014.
