The concert will open with William Bergsma’s Chameleon Variations, a work commissioned by Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP)  in the 1950s and recorded by the orchestra in the early 1960s.  The piece is a set of variations on an original theme for a full symphony orchestra, written in the spirit of the new American music of its time. Rachel Graves, the PYP Concerto Competition winner, will be performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor. Graves is a sophomore at Mountain View High School in Vancouver, WA.
