Your summer dance card just got even fuller as the first annual Montavilla Jazz Festival kicks off this weekend. Featuring a diverse lineup of thirteen cutting edge jazz groups, this festival celebrates the new works being created by Portland’s jazz scene. From the indie jazz muscularity of Blue Cranes to the democratic sensibilities of Portland Jazz Composers’ Ensemble, this exciting event features something for everyone.
Taking place in the Montavilla neighborhood at Post5 Theater at Milepost 5, the festival offers a unique venue and intimate setting with access to local restaurants and a full bar at the venue. Headlining the festival are Blue Cranes on Saturday and the David Friesen Circle 3 Trio on Sunday. Other performances showcase Portland’s best:
George Colligan’s Theoretical Planets; Tom Wilcox’s Superjazzers; PJCE Core Sextet, featuring Darrell Grant; Alan Jones & The Cavemen; Ryan Meagher; The Rich Halley 4; Trio Flux; Kerry Pollitzer Group; Thomas Barber’s Spiral Road; Optic Nerve Trio; and the Blakey Lyman Quartet.
We here at KMHD cannot think of a better way to spend a weekend in the summertime. Hope to see you there. For more information, the website is montavillajazzfest.com.
