For this installment of KMHD’s “Neighborhood Series” we headed to two of Portland’s most iconic places and spaces, The Doug Fir and North Mississippi avenue.

Since the 1950’s, Ural Thomas has been sharing his soulful voice with the world, whether with his local church as a youngster, in do-wop groups as a teenager, or with rock-solid soul and R&B groups in the 1960’s and 70’s.  Now, Thomas takes the stage with a new band and a revitalized sound.  The group’s sound has resonated with the local music scene, selling out shows - and earning them the coveted “Best New Band 2014” award from Willamette Week.

We caught up with Thomas at his practice space in North Portland, and with the band in performance on east Burnside.
