The American Music Program wins the Charles Mingus Competition

Colescott Rubin (upright bass and bass trombone) and Max Roark (flute, clarinet, tenor saxophone) are high school students, and part of Thara Memory’s prestigious American Music Program. The band - The Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra - traveled to New York to participate in the Charles Mingus Competition — and they won for Outstanding Big Band, in the specialized category. They visited KMHD to discuss the discipline it takes to be a serious jazz musician, while still in high school. With high hopes and an insatiable love for music, they share their experiences and visions for, perhaps, a future life in jazz.
