The Peter Epstein Quartet, “Live at Jimmy Mak’s”, a PJCE Records live recording event!
Peter Epstein is one of jazz’s most creative improvisers on saxophone, and tonight he teams up with one of Portland’s fastest growing cultural organizations, The Portland Jazz Composer’s Ensemble (PJCE) to create a live recording that will be released by PJCE Records later this year.
Epstein’s Quartet features some of the most thought-provoking, creative, and virtuosic instrumentalists found anywhere, with Ralph Alessi (trumpet), Sam Minaie (bass), and Mark Ferber (drums). It is a real treat for the Portland audience to be able to see one of their very own come back to play with musicians of this caliber.
Epstein was born in Eugene and grew up in Corvallis, and cut his teeth on the Portland jazz scene from 1984 -1988 playing with entrenched legends such as Nancy King, Ron Steen, Steve Christofferson, Garry Hobbs, and Glen Moore (to name a few).
From Portland, Epstein launched a prolific and profound career as an improviser and composer. With stops through the prestigious CalArts program and the New York jazz scene, he forged meaningful musical relationships with Scott Colley, Ralph Alessi, Ravi Coltrane, James Carney, and several others, gaining international notoriety exemplified by his recordings on MA Recordings, ECM Records, and Songlines Records.
