Drug Manufacturer Reaches $1.1M Settlement With Oregon

Oregon reached a settlement Wednesday with drug manufacturer Insys.

Arizona based Insys makes the powerful schedule II opioid 'Subsys,' which the Food and Drug Administration has approved for treating cancer pain.

But a number of people complained that the drug was being marketed in Oregon for off-label uses like mild neck and back pain. That is, pain unassociated with cancer.

Kristina Edmunson, with the Oregon Attorney General's office, said there were other complaints too.

"Among the allegations that this settlement resolves is that the company provided improper financial incentives to doctors here in Oregon. These were often targeting doctors for aggressive promotion of the drug," she said.

The settlement requires Insys to pay $1.1 million to be split between the state and an organization to prevent opioid abuse.

Calls and emails to Insys were not immediately returned Wednesday evening.
