The U.S. Coast Guard received a report about 8:45 p.m. tonight that a 13-year-old male fell off of a pier and into the Columbia River just north of the Astoria Burger King, in the vicinity of Fishhawk Fisheries, and did not resurface.

“As of right now, we’ve got a (HH-)60 Jayhawk (helicopter) doing search patterns on scene,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Jordan Akiyama. “We’ve also launched one of our 25-foot small boats we have.”

The helicopter scanned with its searchlights the northern Astoria waterfront from west to east and back, upriver from the Burger King, as a flood tide sent the water back up the Columbia. A 25-foot fast response vessel followed along the waterfront underneath.

The Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office rescue boat also assisted in the search.

Akiyama added that the Coast Guard does not yet have a timeline or context of the situation. The story is developing.
