Grant High School is getting a new track and field. After more than 12 years of fundraising, students and donors gathered for the ceremonial groundbreaking on the field Thursday.

The final chunk of funding came from Nike and defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions Ndamukong Suh. The Grant alumnus attended the groundbreaking with both shovel and oversized check in hand. He contributed $250,000 to the project.

Harrison Schrage is a freshman athlete at Grant.

“The new track is probably going to build more opportunities for everyone to advance their track careers. The track we have right now is causing a lot of injuries. It’s condemned right now, we can’t even use it for practice.”

The City’s Parks and Recreation Bureau and Portland Public Schools also contributed to the project.

Grant is aiming to have the new track and field completed before this year’s football season starts.
