Officials say an early morning fire at a Portland elementary school Wednesday won’t delay opening next week. A teacher arrived for work at Chapman Elementary in Northwest Portland and noticed a small fire in a 5th grade classroom. Spokeswoman Christine Miles says the fire department put out the fire quickly.
The second-floor classroom is being repaired, but it won’t be ready for the start of school. Miles says Chapman staff are deciding where to house those children while the fire damage is repaired.
“We are trying to determine that right now. We just know that we’re so thankful that the fire was contained to one classroom, and we’re determining which area those 5th graders can call home room, until the room is ready to go,” she said.
Miles called the damage an “inconvenience”, saying that it will not delay the start of school. She says cleaning rags apparently caught fire in a trash can.
