Housing prices are on the rise in Central Oregon, where the U.S. Census Bureau found that more than half of renters are paying more than recommended.
The Bend Bulletin reports that data released by the bureau in December shows that 55 percent of renters in Deschutes County spent more than 30 percent of their income on housing. In the middle of the Great Recession in 2010, that figure was below 49 percent.
Deschutes County housing prices have been on the rise in part because of new arrivals, a recovering economy and a tight market for rentals.
The median monthly rent in the city of Bend was $955 in 2015. The Census’ American Community Survey found that rent increased more than 9 percent there between 2010 and 2015.
