Epic Aviation is reportedly in the final stages of negotiation to purchase the former Cessna Aircraft building at the Bend Municipal Airport.

It’s the latest sign that after suffering a number of turbulent years, the Bend kit airplane manufacturer is once again on the rise.

When the economy tanked, Bend’s aviation industry also took a nosedive.

In 2009, Cessna Aircraft packed it up, moving operations to Kansas and Mexico.  Other companies were dragged down as well, including what was then known as Epic Air.

The company went into bankruptcy that same year.  Only later would it relaunch as Epic Aircraft.

In March, a Russian company, Engineering LLC, took control of Epic and set it on a new course.  Since then, it’s begun hiring again.

In May, the company purchased its current factory, which it had been renting.  And just this week, the company asked Bend’s City Council to transfer Cessna’s lease on the airport property over to Epic, once the sale of the building goes though.

Asked to comment on the purchase, Epic President Doug King declined, since the deal hasn’t yet officially closed.
