Prineville-based Ochoco Lumber Company has put nearly 33,000 acres up for sale. The Foley Butte Block will be auctioned starting next month, as the company focuses on other areas of its business.
John Rosenthal for Realty Marketing/Northwest is handling the sale. He says Ochoco is selling these lands for strategic reasons.
“They used to have a sawmill in Prineville, which hasn’t been there since 2001. They have the last remaining sawmill in Grant County. They’re focusing all their resources on that project. It’s a strategy to redeploy their assets.”
Rosenthal says he’s had some interest in the land from wood products firms as well as what he calls “non-traditional investors” looking for hard assets. He notes their close proximity to Prineville and several new corporate citizens like Facebook. He suggests the land may hold value for carbon offset credits.
The block has been heavily logged over the years, but Ochoco has also engaged in a large-scale reforestation effort in the 22 years of its ownershi
