Classes are cancelled in the Gresham-Barlow School District Wednesday. District officials made that announcement Tuesday afternoon amid mediation talks with the teachers’ union.

There was no update as of early Wednesday morning.

The union -- the Gresham Barlow Education Association -- set Wednesday as the day teachers will go on strike, if no contract agreement is reached.

District officials say they have to cancel school because they’re not sure if the two sides will reach a settlement Tuesday, and parents and principals need to prepare.

An official with the Oregon Education Association says the cancellation was a surprise, and doesn’t bode well for reaching a settlement before the strike deadline.
