The Department of Justice and the City of Portland released a joint statement Friday, saying they will not meet their deadline for reaching an agreement on police reforms.

A Department of Justice investigation found last month that Portland police engage in a pattern of excessive force against people with mental illness.

No new deadline has been set to come up with the needed changes.

A statement from DOJ and the city said that their discussions have been productive, but need more time.

Once a negotiated agreement is reached, it will be presented to City Council and made publicly available by the City.

Upon approval of City Council, the agreement will be filed in Federal District Court.
