Captain James Nehl served with a Rangers’ Regiment, in an infantry division that was about halfway through a deployment to Afghanistan.

They’ve reportedly been serving in Ghazni Province in the southeastern part of the country. American forces there are trying to make headway fostering resistance against the Taliban among local Afghans.

But the region has also been the site of several targeted killings, in which the victims were men known to have opposed the Taliban.

Nehl’s battalion was based in Fort Riley, Kansas. The Defense Department says he was killed by small arms fire while on patrol.

He was from the small town of Gardiner, near Reedsport, in the South Coast’s Douglas County. A professional page attributed to Nehl says he’d been in the Army for six years.
