A long-time Bend City Councilor ousted in this week's election says she won't fill out the remainder of her term.
Kathie Eckman served more than two decades on the city council, but not all consecutively. Mayor Jeff Eager says Eckman is stepping down to attend to a family health matter.
Eager says Eckman announced her decision in a letter addressed to him and fellow councilors. He says Eckman requested that council appoint the winner in that race, Sally Russell, who otherwise would take over in January.
He explained, "I intended and I believe the other councilors intend to honor Kathy's request and do what is the logical thing, and that is to appoint Sally Russell to fill out the remainder of this term."
Eager praised Eckman for her years of service to the community. He says council will likely fill the vacancy at its next meeting on November 19.
