The Eugene City Council voted Wednesday to formally rename Broadway Plaza to Kesey Square, ending a year-long debate over the identity of the downtown space.

The vote was 5-1. Councilor Mike Clark, a staunch critic of the name change, voted no. Councilors Greg Evans and Alan Zelenka were absent for the vote.

The council action repealed a resolution city councilors approved in 1996 naming the square, a remnant of the city’s failed pedestrian mall, as Broadway Plaza. The square is located at the southeast corner of Broadway and Willamette Street.

The name change took effect immediately.
