The federal government announced Thursday that it’s cracking down on passenger bus safety. Certain motorcoach companies are being targeted.

Recent fatal bus crashes in southern California and Eastern Oregon prompted the U.S. Department of Transportation to take immediate action.

The agency wants to ensure that all bus companies have properly licensed drivers and mechanically sound vehicles.

Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood says his agency will need help to find companies that are out of compliance.

Consumers are urged to report any unsafe bus company, vehicle, or driver to the agency.

LaHood acknowledges the size of the task, but says his agency will use a targeted approach.

“We’re not gonna be sitting on our hands. We’re gonna be out there doing investigations, shutting down companies that are not operating the way they’re supposed to.”

LaHood says specially trained inspectors, state law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders are all on the job.
