The U.S. Forest Service is offering two "fee free days" in June in Oregon and Washington. Federal recreation sites including picnic areas, boat launches, trail heads and visitor centers will be free to the public. June 6 is National Trails Day and June 13 is National Get Outdoors Day; both days will be "fee free days."

Jocelyn Biro with the Forest Service wants to encourage people to get outside.

"It's unfortunate, but our youth is no longer connecting with the woods and it's important for families to get out and share that experience," she said.

Biro said some of the most popular areas in the Northwest are Mount St. Helens and the Oregon Dunes. The "fee free days" don't apply to any campgrounds, tours or recreation rentals. They are for day use.

Additionally, on June 6 several fishing sites in southern Oregon will be participating in a free fishing weekend. Some of the sites are Fish Lake in Jackson County, Cooper Creek in Douglas County and Libby Pond in Curry County. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has a complete list of fishing sites on their website.
