Fire season appears to be off to an early start in Central Oregon.  Fire crews spent the weekend battling a wildfire near La Pine.

The Burgess Road Fire began after high winds knocked down power lines.  Those same winds helped drive the fire that eventually scorched 168 acres and forced the evacuation of roughly 50 homes.

Firefighters have since contained the blaze. And residents have been let back in their houses.

Lisa Clark is a fire information officer with the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch.

“To say we’ve had an evacuation in early May is not unheard of.  It’s definitely uncommon though.  A few years ago we did have an evacuation in Redmond in early May as well.  It definitely challenges all of our resources though, when the Red Cross, everybody, you just don’t expect to have to dust off everything this early in the season.”

Clark says so far Central Oregon has experienced a very dry spring. Looking forward, forecasters are predicting higher than normal fire activity for the months of July and August.
