The White House has announced that first lady Michelle Obama will deliver this year’s commencement address at Oregon State University.
OSU’s Steve Clark says the university was lucky to have attracted the first lady’s notice. Her brother, Craig Robinson, is head coach of the OSU men’s basketball team, but Clark thinks that alone wouldn’t have been enough to ensure Obama’s time.
“We really think the strong connection Oregon State has to her mission of reducing childhood obesity is the real reason she’s coming,” Clark says.
The school has several multimillion-dollar initiatives devoted to research and prevention of childhood obesity.
Clark says there may be a limited opportunity for some public seating, but at this point, the only sure way to get in is to be related to, or close friends with, a graduating Oregon State University student.
OSU commencement is Sunday, June 17, in Corvallis.
