A former Bend city councilor has plans to run against the Deschutes County district attorney, who was recently embroiled in a firing controversy.

KTVZ reports that John Hummel will challenge DA Patrick Flaherty in the May primary.

In August, the state settled a lawsuit that alleged Flaherty illegally fired three employees when he took office in 2010.

Flaherty said the lawsuit was unfounded and the state shouldn’t have settled.

Hummel accuses the district attorney of mishandling several cases during his tenure and costing taxpayers through unnecessary controversies.
