Private First Class Cody Patterson died of injuries sustained when his unit was hit by an improvised explosive device, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

It was Patterson’s second deployment to Afghanistan. The assistant principal of Philomath High School, Jon Bartlow, remembers him as captain of the football team and a top school fundraiser for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

“He was a neat kid,” he said. “He worked hard in school. He was exactly the kind of kid I’d expect to be a Ranger and to fight for his country.”

The attack killed three other soldiers, all in their 20s: 1st Lieutenant Jennifer  Moreno of San Diego; Special Agent Joseph Peters, Missouri; and Sergeant Patrick Hawkins of Pennsylvania.
