OLYMPIA, Wash. – Opponents of gay marriage in Washington vow to run a civil campaign to repeal the state’s new marriage equality law. Preserve Marriage Washington Wednesday submitted twice the voter signatures it needs to qualify for the November ballot.

The group’s Joseph Backholm says he wants a campaign about issues, not people.

“This is not about pejorative. This is about what is marriage," he says. "And we’re asking the question for the state what is marriage? We don’t have to talk about anybody to clarify that marriage is between a man and a woman.”

The sponsor of Washington’s new same-sex marriage law says he’s disappointed, but not surprised Referendum 74 appears to have qualified for the ballot. Democratic State Senator Ed Murray says he’s confident Washington voters will uphold the law in November.
