A Multnomah County grand jury ruled Monday that two Portland police officers were justified in shooting a man who brandished a starter pistol.

The shooting took place June 28 outside of a WinCo Foods grocery store in Northeast Portland.

On the night of the shooting, Portland police contacted 29-year-old Alan Lee Bellew and two other people outside of the store. After speaking with Bellew, police said he grabbed what appeared to be a gun from his car and pointed it at the officers.

Two officers — Dominic Lovato, an eight-year veteran of the bureau, and Michael Currier, a seven-year veteran — then shot and killed Bellew.

Investigators later determined the gun was a starter pistol. Lovato and Currier were placed on paid leave while they awaited a ruling from the grand jury.

Transcripts from the grand jury hearing may be made public later this month if the court approves a motion, according to a release issued Tuesday.
