Mayor Charlie Hales put a roadblock in the development of a controversial apartment complex on Southeast Division Street. He has required that the developer apply for a new permit altogether.
Neighbors have been vocal about their opposition to the project. A few days ago, the city revealed that it was already reviewing a revised permit, despite lack of public input.
Dana Haynes is a spokesman for the mayor. He says once the neighbors voiced concerns about the permit review that they didn’t know about, the mayor started looking into it.
“And when all was said and done, the mayor said you know what? I’m going to call a foul on the play. I don’t think the neighbors had all the information in this case that they should have had. Let’s stop this process, slow it down, and not go forward with that permit as written,” Haynes said.
The developer still owns the land and can file a new permit, which would start the entire process over. That would give the neighbors another opportunity to weigh in.
