In his article Churches Remain At The Heart Of Dispersed Black Communities reporter Aaron Scott looked at how churches tie people from Portland's displaced black community back to their old neighborhoods.
Many African Americans who grew up in inner North and Northeast Portland have moved to the city’s edges. So churches are finding ways to bring them back for services.
In this audio postcard Scott rides along with the volunteer van driver for the Highland Christian Center.
Roberta Tyler traverses the metropolitan area to pick up church members. She lives with her two granddaughters, and she works as a home care provider.
This audio postcard was produced by Aaron Scott in a partnership between OPB and Portland Monthly Magazine. His story “By the Grace of God,” about how Portland’s black churches are facing the displacement of their congregations is available at portlandmonthlymag.com.
