The Hood to Coast relay race has changed its course to avoid the Springwater Corridor Trail and the hundreds of homeless people living along it.

The race’s chief operating officer, Dan Floyd, said participants will run about about 40 blocks around the corridor for safety reasons.

“We do everything we can to showcase the entire 200 mile course, from Mt. Hood to the Oregon coast and pretty diverse areas in-between, to people that travel here from all 50 states to participate. So it’s very important that we ensure their safety,“ he said.

Depending on their speed, teams could have been running along the Springwater Corridor late at night and during the early hours of the morning.

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales had planned to clear the trail of campers earlier this month. But he delayed it to next month.

The run is scheduled for August 26 and 27.
