One of Portland’s oldest dance companies is preparing for a landmark tour abroad. The Jefferson Dancers leave for China next week to perform in some of the country’s most prestigious venues.

The Jefferson High School company consists of 14 to 18-year olds. They’re trained in many different styles of dance.

Their international invitation comes from the Portland-based company Chinese Cultural Productions. Along with their partners overseas, they’ve arranged for the students’ 4-city tour.

The company has never been to China — and Senior Aaron Cryer has never been out of this country.

Cryer said, “I’m just excited about the food, Chinese food is one of my favorites. And I love to eat, even though I don’t look like it, I really do.”

A spokeswoman for Chinese Cultural Productions says China is transitioning to a more creative economy, and this tour can create awareness of Portland’s local talent.
