THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR:

Community members in Southern Oregon will have more time to weigh in on the liquefied natural gas export terminal proposed for Coos Bay.

The Jordan Cove LNG project and the accompanying Pacific Connector Pipeline are both waiting to hear back on several permit applications and a draft environmental impact statement.

One approval needed is through the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and deals with water quality:

In Oregon, DEQ is responsible for reviewing proposed projects to ensure that they will not degrade water quality, and that waterways remain safe for a wide range of uses including recreation, fish habitat and aquatic life. Because construction and operation of the proposed Jordan Cove Energy LNG terminal and pipeline project may result in the discharge of pollution into the waters of the state, DEQ is reviewing the project for a 401 water quality certification to ensure that the proposed project meets state water quality standards.

At the request of several environmental groups, Oregon DEQ has extended the public comment period an additional 60 days to March 13.

The DEQ has also added four informational meetings on the water quality permit. Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will also be on hand to answer questions about their water quality approval process, happening concurrently with the state.

Application materials can be viewed in hardcopy form at DEQ offices in Portland, Eugene and Medford.
