A spokesman for Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber says the governor “sees no reason for civilians to have assault weapons” and has asked his staff to bring forward a range of options to improve school security, expand access to mental health and address firearms regulations.

Spokesman Tim Raphael said Wednesday the recent massacre at a Connecticut elementary school has caused everyone to consider these issues, and there’s “clearly an opportunity to make progress” on the divisive issue of gun control.

Meanwhile, State Sen. Ginny Burdick, a Portland Democrat, plans to introduce legislation that would ban gun magazines with more than 10 rounds.

Republican Sen. Ted Ferrioli of John Day says Burdick’s suggestion and a potential ban on semiautomatic rifles would affect law-abiding citizens and do nothing to deter criminals or madmen.
