Kitzhaber, Roberts Sign Gay Marriage Petition

AP | Feb. 15, 2013 8:19 a.m.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber and former Gov. Barbara Roberts have attended a Valentine’s Day kick-off event for a campaign to reverse Oregon’s voter-approved ban on gay marriage.

Kitzhaber spokesman Tim Raphael says both signed a sponsorship petition Thursday.

The gay-rights group Basic Rights Oregon needs 1,000 valid sponsorship signatures to advance its cause.

Basic Rights Oregon spokeswoman Amy Ruiz says the group sponsored 14 events Wednesday night and Thursday across Oregon. She said late Thursday she’s “fairly confident” that supporters met their initial 1,000-signature goal.

To qualify for the November 2014 ballot, they’ll need more than 116,000 signatures.
