The Lake Oswego School Board voted 3-2 Monday to close two of the district's elementary schools. Uplands and Bryant elementary will close.
Portable classrooms will be added to River Grove Elementary to alleviate overcrowding. 6th graders will be moved from elementary to junior high school.
Board Chair John Wendland says the changes are needed to conserve money.
“I want to make sure that we have every available dollar to put into teachers and operating our district.” Wendland says.
Many parents at the meeting were unhappy at the prospect of schools closing.
Nicole Seawright has children in Lake Oswego elementary schools and opposes the decision. She says every child in every elementary school will be affected by the closing because class sizes will go up.
The changes approved will take effect starting in September with the next school year.
