A citizens group in Longview, Washington narrowed down possible solutions for water problems in the city Tuesday evening.

The group wants to draw the city’s water out of the Cowlitz River after some residents have complained about quality.

The possible switch to the river comes just two years after Longview changed its water source from the river to ground wells.

Volcanic sediment in the Cowlitz River had gummed up the water treatment plant, and the process to get the water at the time threatened endangered fish.

Both options the group landed on Tuesday would return to getting water from the river, either through a well under the riverbed or a surface water intake.

"Those would vary just by location, where along the river you would chose to place it and the cost may vary," said Amy Blain, a civil engineer with the city.

The citizens group is scheduled to hold an open house this month to educate the public on the two options.

It plans to make a formal recommendation to the city council later this summer.
