No one knows this more than Alvin “Abbie” Van Pelt. He lit his first cigarette as a teenager five decades ago and worked up to a pack a day. As an adult, he began every morning with a smoke and a Pepsi. In 2010, his doctor diagnosed lung cancer that had spread to his bones.
