The Thorns beat the Western New York Flash 2-0 on Saturday. The win brought them the national title in their inaugural year.

Commissioner Amanda Fritz read the proclamation — “Now therefore Charlie Hales, the Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the City of Roses, and Soccer City USA, does  hereby proclaim Wednesday, September 4th, 2013 to be a day of recognition for the Portland Thorns FC, champions of the National Women’s Soccer League, and we encourage all residents to observe this day.”

The last time a professional team from Portland won a national title was in 1977, when the Trailblazers won the NBA Championship.
