Mayor Proclaims Day Of Recognition For Portland Thorns FC

Portland city leaders recognized the Portland Thorns FC Wednesday for securing the National Women’s Soccer League title.

The Thorns beat the Western New York Flash 2-0 on Saturday. The win brought them the national title in their inaugural year.

Commissioner Amanda Fritz read the proclamation — “Now therefore Charlie Hales, the Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the City of Roses, and Soccer City USA, does  hereby proclaim Wednesday, September 4th, 2013 to be a day of recognition for the Portland Thorns FC, champions of the National Women’s Soccer League, and we encourage all residents to observe this day.”

The last time a professional team from Portland won a national title was in 1977, when the Trailblazers won the NBA Championship.
