Milwaukie police officers shot and killed a man Wednesday morning after a brief car chase in Southeast Portland.

Two officers from the Milwaukie Police Department tried to stop a white SUV in the Darlington neighborhood in Southeast Portland.

The driver led them on a short chase.

Vivian Healy lives in the neighborhood and heard the commotion. “You know, I was waking up and all of a sudden, I heard something. Maybe two shots, at least two. And then lots of sirens going on,” she said.

Both officers fired shots at the driver and hit him at least once, according to the police. They haven’t explained what led the officers to draw their weapons, but say the driver was uncooperative after his car stopped at 37th and Johnson Creek Avenue.

They have not said if the driver was armed. Police say the officers called for back-up and performed CPR on the driver.

He was taken to a Portland hospital and pronounced dead.

The Clackamas County Major Crimes Team and the Portland Police Bureau are conducting a joint investigation into what led the officers to discharge their weapons.
