Beginning this coming Monday, all Multnomah County libraries will be closed on Mondays. Some branches will reduce their hours by even more.
In last May's primary, county voters approved the continuation of a levy that funds Multnomah County libraries. But more money is needed.
David Austin, the communications director for Multnomah County, says the County made it clear that the levy would not eliminate the need for some reductions.
"Given inflation, the economy, the cost of paying employees and benefits and things like that, the cost of fuel and lot of other things, that meant that there would have to be cuts," he says."
Multnomah County is sponsoring a series of community meetings to discuss how to fund libraries in the future. The meetings begin this Monday evening at the Central Library and continue at other branches through the month. Click here for meeting times and places.
