Mystery Bugs Biting Beaverton First Graders

A school district spokeswoman says mysterious bugs have been biting first-graders at an elementary school in the Portland suburb of Beaverton.

KATU-TV reports that Beaverton School District spokeswoman Maureen Wheeler says the bugs are microscopic. Several first-graders at McKay Elementary have developed bites and rashes in the past three weeks.

Wheeler says at least two pest control companies have been to the school but they can’t figure out what the bugs are or where they came from. The classroom has been sprayed but the bugs are still there.

Now a bug specimen has been sent to Oregon State University and first-grade students have been moved to the gym for class.

The school says there are no reports of bugs spreading to other classrooms or students’ homes.
