A stargazing campaign is underway at Umpqua Community College in Douglas County.

The Roseburg News Review reports that a professor there is hoping to raise about $127,000 to open an observatory.

Most of the money would go toward buying six powerful new telescopes.  They’d be capable of capturing heavenly images that are not visible to the naked eye.

The college hopes to break ground on the observatory this fall.

The school plans regular gatherings there, where astronomers, students and community members can consider everything from star clusters and nebulae to supernovas and comets.
