Oregon’s newest professional baseball team has gone from bears to beers, as it moves from central Washington to Washington County.
The former Yakima Bears are now the Hillsboro Hops – as in the signature ingredient of Northwest beer.
The short-season minor league team made the announcement Tuesday.
“Our main goal was to be unique and be able to have fun with it, and I think we’ve accomplished that with Hops. And we wanted to have a character, because to have a character on a hat will sell nationwide,” says Hops’ general manager KL Wombacher.
The team logo features a green hops flower with a face on it, with evergreen trees and a snow-capped mountain in the background. Team officials say they hope to work with Hillsboro schools to come up with a mascot for the beer-themed team.
